Enjoy the Mistakes

“To practice any art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow. So do it." - Kurt Vonnegut

I am always experimenting and trying new tecniques. I can get bored pretty easily in my creative practice if I'm not constantly pushing myself to think outside the box, to try a new position, a new technique, a new way of holding my lens, or a new way to drop ink to paper.

I love working with my hands and last month was itching to try to make a few backgrounds for still life photography. I made this one from a few shades of gray acrylic paint and spackle. I loved the project itself. But you know what else I realized during the process? I don't like shooting traditional still life photography! I took too many photos with slight variations and the culling/editing process was enough to want me to pull my eyes out staring at the computer screen. I prefer the unstaged; the unknown in my work. I love finding a natural scene whether it's found in nature or even around my home.

Trying new things is part of the creative process. It's how we grow, how we evolve in life, not just in our art practice. It's how we up-level.

So here's to all 'mistakes' + 'missteps' we may take in our life and creative practices- enjoy every step in the journey!
