Rose Hips / Plant of the Month

I’m not sure what the difference this winter is but there has been an increase in the wild rosehips around my property. I love foraging for rosehips in the winter- it’s best to harvest after the first frost which ripens the fruit.  What I DON’T love is the small thorns on the stems of the plant! We’ve been making some headway on clearing up our creek area and we are currently overrun with the plants and because they are invasive in Virginia, I have no issues with removing them in the process! I have harvested more this past winter than in the last few years and wanted to share some of my favorite ways to use them!

Elderberry Syrup

Teas - get a boost of Vitamin C when adding to your favorite blend of tea

Face Serum - you can find my two variations in my book and add rose hips to your infusion

Body Oil - I’ve shared my winter version over at Mother Earth News here and a lighter version for warmer weather here

Bath Tea

Simple Syrup for homemade cocktails, sodas, kombucha, ice tea, lemonade, etc. - if you’ve never made a simple syrup before, read this post and then get busy! It couldn’t be easier + the flavor combinations are neverending.

I’d love to hear how you incorporate rose hips into your wellness practices. Feel free to leave a comment and let me know how you use them.

After the first frost is the best time to harvest. After drying, I de-stem them and keep them in a mason jar in my apthoecary until it’s time to use.
